Curriculum Vitae.

From user interface & user experience to general graphic design, fine art, photography and art restoration, I bring an open mind and collaborative spirit to the table...

UI / UE Design.

Since 2006, I worked as the incumbent UI / UE designer for Birdstep Technology a builder of wireless connection management and cellular data offload software for Telecoms, OEM's and Multinational Consumer Electronics firms around the world. With Birdstep, I wrote the book. Working as the primary designer meant that I needed to function at all levels of the design process on all projects.

Web Design.

Working mainly within the wine & spirits industry back in the late 90's and early 2000's, I began to hone my skills in web & digital design with the advent of CSS, JavaScript & cross browser support in the air. As a web designer now, I am able to function not only as a the art director & graphic design but also as a front end developer all while applying my skills with photography as well as site & content quality.

Logo / Print Design.

From school projects to freelance poster art and club flyers. I cut my teeth on logo and print design and am still quite proud much of my early work, many of which were executed using traditional, fine art and paste-up techniques that combined traditional water colour and colloage to enhance the overall design and demand attention. Today I utilize many of these layering skills in my UI work to gain the right effect in a UI.

My interest and experience in photography goes back to my father where I first learned to shoot with 120mm film stock. Inevitably I would take photography classes well into college, learning to develop & print large & small format as well as proper framing and lighting. These skills have not only influence my understanding of design but lent themselves as a service for client website needs.

Art Restoration / Conservation.

I was fortunate to have apprenticed with a commercial art restoration house in San Jose, California. This period of time taught me a great deal about patience, attention to detail and how to make simple tools do many things. I was also able to combine my love of chemistry with my love of art, and found that repairing heavily damaged paintings & over the course of several months is an incredible reward in and of itself.

I grew up fixing and pulling things apart to see what made them tick. Doing so made me pay attention to the most subtle details, the small & nuanced aspects of design. Eventually my father would teach me basic carpentry, metal work & such; conveying the importance of "not cutting" corners, making things fit, be functional & maintain beauty. As I applied my knowledge of detail & nuance, I would also come closer to art.

Who Is LuneDogDesign.

LuneDogDesign is a moniker I chose back in the late 90's and one that is connected to friendship. "LuneDog" grew out of the minds of my best friend and I as both identity and a goofy, potentially unassuming(we thought) band name. Some things just tend to stick, and so LuneDogDesign became the masthead that would represent me as a graphic designer from that time forward.

About Joey Nelson.

I can tell you that I've worked in the tech industry for over 20 years; been a Software QA engineer, a Graphic Designer and performed various other rolls and duties thereof, but at the end of the day, I think that these things would somehow not sum up the extent of my experience & value as a designer. Along the way i've been lucky enough to learn and work as an Art Restorer & Conservater as well as Fine Art Framer, teacher & and freelance designer. I've been able to draw a tremendous amount of strength and build a large toolbox of skills from this work. They've taught me to see, to be patient, to work with a variety of people and to think outside-outside the box. Basically, I don't see a box.

Joey Nelson

UI / UE Graphic Designer

When I'm not working; pushing pixels and flexing vectors, I enjoy hiking the PCT and other trails, both long distance and short. I am also an avid swimmer, road biker and practicioner of Aidkido. I like to cook & support the arts, almost as much as I like to climb mountains and hike for days...

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

"There are times, sir, when men of good conscience cannot blindly follow orders. You acknowledge their sentience, but ignore their personal liberties and freedom. Order a man to turn his child over to the state? Not while I am his captain."
